Why Most Film Study is Useless

Most Film coaches only point out Mistakes

Pointing out what went wrong and what you should’ve done instead, is easy! The hard part is figuring out how you actually do the right thing the next opportunity.

Most film coaches mean well but fail to give players useful help.

1

Most Film Coaches focus on outcomes

An outcome is a result, you cannot go into a chaotic situation, thinking about a result 10 seconds later. You need a step by step guide that eventually builds up your instincts so you don’t need to think.

What are the actual steps between hockey knowledge and acting.

2

Pointless advice

Imagine if a coach came to you and said you need to play more like McDavid. Then showed you an example of you playing slow… Then played a highlight reel of McDavid goals.

If all it took was seeing highlights, the player who watched the most YouTube would be the best.

That isn’t how it works, let me tell you how it does work…

How you will learn with Conscious Hockey

  • A Film Coach needs to understand your current style of play AND what your ideal form should look like.

  • That’s why I analyze your game film as well as study players you should be trying to emulate in 1 on 1 zoom meetings.

  • Structured and Progressive video breakdowns.

1

  • Build a foundation of decision making fundamentals then improve your creativity.

  • You are taken step by step through different phases of the game, actively practicing what you learn at all times.

  • Starting with adaptable offensive deception, to shut down defense, and predictive off puck movement.

2

  • Successful film study comes from simulating decisions...

  • With accurate guidance of what to look out for from your opponents…

  • Completing Simulation Video Quizzes make you identify qualities of actual situations.

  • My name is Xander, I am a former NCAA D2 player. I got fed up with wasting my time and energy doing drills with no connection to a real game.

I created Conscious Hockey to help players like you, study the strategies of the best NHL players.

  • Players want specific details to practice, not buzzwords that everybody already has heard.

I started by analyzing game film and compiling a library of clips of all the best players.

I started posting about my research on Instagram. Where I developed a following and got valuable feedback on what problems to study next.

  • A business of training players to shoot and stick handle on and off ice developed... But there was still something missing.

I saw a need for a personalized program that taught players decision making strategy .

There are a lot of great coaches that teach techniques of skating, shooting, and stick handling.

Very few coaches teach players how to see the ice, what decisions to make, and how to deceive opponents.

At that point I began shifting my focus from in person skills training to online film study.

The Film Analysis Program developed. Doing what I love to do everyday is a privilege that I don’t take for granted.

Studying hockey’s best, and teaching players how to achieve their full potential is the best job I could ask for.
